When to Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicide (and When It's Too Late)

Pre-emergent herbicide is the most time-sensitive product in your entire lawn care calendar. Apply it too early and it breaks down before crabgrass germinates. Apply it too late and it does nothing - because the crabgrass has already sprouted. That window is narrower than most people think.

This guide tells you exactly when the window opens, how to know when it closes, and which products work best for cool-season grass in most US zones.

The 55°F Rule

Pre-emergent herbicides work by creating a chemical barrier in the top layer of soil that prevents weed seeds from germinating. They do not kill existing weeds or seeds - they only interrupt germination.

Crabgrass begins to germinate when soil temperature at 4-inch depth reaches 55°F for three or more consecutive days. That's your trigger. You want pre-emergent applied and watered in before that threshold is crossed.

Timing by zone

The 55°F threshold arrives at different times depending on where you live. Cool-season zones (Northeast, Midwest) typically hit this window in late March to mid-April. Transition zones hit it earlier - often mid-March. Enter your ZIP at mylawnweek.com to see your zone's current soil temperature.

Soil Temperature Guide for Pre-Emergent Timing

Soil Temp (4")StatusAction
Below 50°FToo earlyWait - product may break down before crabgrass germinates
50–54°FApply nowIdeal window - apply and water in within 48 hours
55–58°FApply immediatelyWindow closing - apply today if you haven't already
59°F+Too late for preventionSwitch to post-emergent (quinclorac) once crabgrass is visible

How to Check Without a Thermometer

A soil thermometer is inexpensive and accurate, but if you don't have one there's a practical shortcut: check forsythia. When forsythia bushes in your area finish blooming, soil temperature is typically around 55°F. That's your visual cue that the window is either open or closing.

If you see forsythia petals falling and you haven't applied pre-emergent yet, you're right at the edge of the window - apply that day if possible.

Which Product to Use

Prodiamine (best overall)

Prodiamine is the most widely recommended pre-emergent for cool-season grass. It has a longer residual than many competitors, meaning it stays active in the soil longer. Available in granular form as Barricade. Shop Amazon

Pendimethalin (widely available)

Pendimethalin is the active ingredient in Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer. Slightly shorter residual than prodiamine, but effective if applied at the right time. Shop Amazon

Don't apply if you're overseeding

Pre-emergent herbicides can't distinguish between weed seeds and grass seeds. If you applied pre-emergent in spring, do not overseed until at least 8–12 weeks have passed, or wait until the fall overseeding window. Applying both simultaneously wastes both products.

How to Apply It Correctly

  • Use a broadcast spreader set to the rate on the bag - under-application is the most common mistake
  • Water in immediately after application (½ inch of irrigation or rainfall within 48 hours activates the product)
  • Do not aerate after applying - you'll break the chemical barrier
  • Apply when the ground is not frozen and grass is not actively wet from dew or rain

If You Missed the Window

If soil temperatures in your area have already passed 55°F and crabgrass is emerging, pre-emergent won't help. Spot-treat with a quinclorac-based post-emergent once the crabgrass has 2–3 tillers (young leaves), or accept the crabgrass for this season and focus on a strong fall programme.

The best long-term defence against crabgrass isn't pre-emergent - it's a thick, healthy stand of grass that doesn't give crabgrass anywhere to take hold. Overseeding in fall does more to prevent crabgrass than any chemical programme alone.
